From AEB: The restoration of the wall-paintings in Nefertari's tomb by the Getty Conservation Institute was one of the great adventures in Egyptology of the 1980s and 1990s. This beautifully illustrated German account of the work contains many images not seen in English-language books. The text describes what we know of the life of Ramesses II's principal wife, one of the only royal partners to be deified during her lifetime.

From Amazon.com: In each culture obelisks have taken on new meanings and associations. To the Egyptians, the obelisk was the symbol of a pharaoh's right to rule and connection to the divine. In ancient Rome, obelisks were the embodiment of Rome's coming of age as an empire. To nineteenth-century New Yorkers, the obelisk in Central Park stood for their country's rejection of the trappings of empire just as it was itself beginning to acquire imperial power. And to a twentieth-century reader of Freud, the obelisk had anatomical and psychological connotations. The history of obelisks is a story of technical achievement, imperial conquest, Christian piety and triumphalism, egotism, scholarly brilliance, political hubris, bigoted nationalism, democratic self-assurance, Modernist austerity, and Hollywood kitsch-in short, the story of Western civilization.

From the publisher's website: Father of history, father of lies : These descriptions show the conflicting viewpoints expressed by later scholars regarding the wonders Herodotus described in his travels. Among the buildings, the Egyptian Labyrinth was at the top of his list, and this has given rise to much speculation about its form, size, and purpose over the last two centuries. Pharaoh's Gateway to Eternity searches for the answers to these problems, using a new approach in examining the basic textual and archaeological evidence available today. The result identifies the Labyrinth with the pyramid complex of the Twelfth Dynasty king Amenemhat III more firmly, and to reject the use of any architectural evidence other than that belonging to 1800 B.C. in the reconstruction of the temples and tombs of this great complex of buildings. The author uses unpublished material from Petrie's notebooks and letters forming an account of his excavations, as well as contemporary Middle Kingdom texts and architectural parallels.
